Work Restaurants
Turk's Inn
A defunct Wisconsin supper club, rebuilt in Bushwick with more than 900 of its original artifacts.
An over-the-top, multi-storey restaurant and venue inspired by a now-defunct supper club from Hayward, Wisconsin.
More than 900 artifacts from the original Turk's Inn were catalogued and installed.
01 The assignment
Bring a beloved Midwestern institution back to life in a Brooklyn building it was never designed for, faithfully enough to satisfy people who remember the original, and well enough to run as a busy restaurant, bar and music venue.
02 The design response
Painstaking detail went into recreating the kitsch of the original Turk's: reproducing the carpet, building replica banquettes and millwork, and incorporating over 900 artifacts from the original restaurant. Red walls, brass plates, lanterns, paisley and a pagoda-roofed exterior complete the transplant.
03 How it operates
The plan stacks a dining room and bar with a separate music venue, The Sultan Room, so that dinner service and late programming can run independently.
04 Materials and custom elements
Custom-reproduced carpet, replica upholstered banquettes, stained millwork, patterned wallcoverings and an installed collection of original signage, ceramics, lamps and art.
