One Fifth celebrates the location and history of its namesake building. Chef Marc Forgione's Greenwich Village restaurant was designed to feel as though it had always been there.

Named one of New York City's most beautiful new restaurants by Galerie in 2022.

01 The assignment

Open a new restaurant in a building with a long public memory, in a neighbourhood that notices. The design had to honour what came before without becoming a museum, and give a serious kitchen and a busy bar the room they need.

02 The design response

Great effort went into curating art and artifacts from the space in its previous iterations, alongside nods to the surrounding Village. Finishes were chosen to emphasise a warm, cosy environment, with a strong emphasis on reclaimed materials and furniture: dark panelling, worn wood, brass, a piano in the corner and a wall of framed history.

03 How it operates

A long bar with an amaro back bar anchors the front room; the Fountain Room and a private dining room extend the plan for events and larger parties. A host stand and a pasta station give the front of house its own moments.

04 Materials and custom elements

Reclaimed wood tables and flooring, stained panelling and wainscot, a caged amaro display, marble-topped bar, brass and glass lighting, and an extensive collection of framed photography and ephemera.
